Skopje: An Unexpected City#
When you arrive in Skopje, the first reaction is usually surprise. In the city center: giant statues, Neo-Classical buildings, ancient bridges — and directly opposite, an Ottoman bazaar. This contrast is not accidental — it was deliberately constructed through the Skopje 2014 project.
Whether you love it or hate it, Skopje is an unforgettable city.

Places to Visit#
1. Macedonia Square and Skopje 2014 Statues#
The heart of the city. Imagine a Central European square — but with giant statues, Neo-Classical buildings and monuments at every corner. This project, completed in 2014, cost billions of dollars and divided Macedonians. But for tourists, it’s extremely interesting.
Alexander the Great Statue: In the center of the square, 22 meters high. Skopje’s new symbol.
2. Stone Bridge (Kamen Most)#
Dating from the Ottoman period, from the 15th century. Over the Vardar River which divides the city in two. Connects the statue-filled square with the Old Bazaar.
3. Old Bazaar (Stara Čaršija)#
Cross the bridge to the other bank and the city completely changes. The Neo-Classical statues suddenly give way to an Ottoman bazaar. Narrow streets, coppersmiths, jewelers, coffeehouses. Like a small version of Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar.
4. Mustafa Pasha Mosque#
Inside the Old Bazaar, dating from the 15th century. One of Skopje’s largest and most beautiful mosques. A fine example of Ottoman architecture.
5. Kale Fortress#
A fortress overlooking the city from above. The climb is somewhat steep but the view is worth it. Skopje and its surroundings are visible. Its history goes back to the 6th century AD, rebuilt during the Ottoman period.
6. Matka Canyon#
15 km west of the city. A dam, canyon and caves. You can take a boat trip or go hiking. If you’re visiting Skopje, dedicate a day to this natural wonder.
