Schengen Visa 2026: No Longer Just About Documents#
The Schengen visa process is no longer just about gathering the right documents. Today, the main challenge is finding an appointment and accessing the right information at the right time.
In this article, I’m sharing the experiences from 5 successful Schengen applications I made between 2021 and 2025. None of it is theoretical.

My Schengen Visa History#
My experience with Schengen visas didn’t start recently. In 2011 I completed approximately one year and ten months of training in England. After returning to Turkey, my work required travel to countries like the Netherlands, Spain, France and Germany, and during this time I obtained a Schengen visa multiple times.
In 2017, in the pre-pandemic period, I had a 1-year multiple-entry Schengen visa. Back then the application process wasn’t as stressful as it is today. After the pandemic, I realized that this logic had completely changed.
What Changed After the Pandemic?#
After the pandemic, Schengen countries began following a much more cautious policy particularly toward applications from Turkey. This affected not just visa outcomes, but also access to applications.
Key changes:
- Finding an appointment became nearly impossible
- Structures like VFS Global became both more expensive and more opaque
- Intermediary agencies charge high fees but can’t guarantee results
- Waiting times extended significantly
Why Greece and Why Kozmos?#
After my research, I saw that the most accessible Schengen visa can be obtained through Greece. The main reason is that Greece, unlike many countries, processes its visa applications through Kozmos rather than VFS Global.
Advantages of Kozmos:
- The process is more transparent
- Reachable by phone — in the post-pandemic period this makes a huge difference
- Announces appointments via Instagram
- Form information can be updated on the appointment day
Online Form: Detailed But Flexible#
The first step when applying through Kozmos is filling out a detailed online form. At first glance it looks long and tedious, but there’s a critical detail:
Most of this information can be changed later. When filling out the form, everything doesn’t need to be exactly final.
On the appointment day, the form printout is submitted on paper and necessary fields can be updated. During a period when you’re having difficulty finding an appointment, this flexibility is very important so as not to hold up the process.
Finding an Appointment: The Most Critical Stage#
The genuinely difficult part is the appointment stage. No matter how often you check the system, you’re usually met with a “no available appointments” message.
What changed the process: Instead of just staring at a screen, calling Kozmos directly by phone.
My question was very direct: “When do new appointments usually open up?”
I learned that during one period, this was Friday mornings. After getting this information, instead of making random attempts for weeks, I focused on Friday mornings and was able to get an appointment.
Instagram Follow#
Later the system changed. Kozmos began announcing on Instagram when new appointments opened. We also learned this through phone conversations.
Practical step: Turn on notifications for Kozmos’s Instagram account. Instagram notifications may not always be instant — manually check during the day too.
With this method, we didn’t just get appointments for ourselves — we also helped friends find appointments and get their visas.
Alternative Application Cities#
Most people automatically opt for Istanbul. But the density in Istanbul makes finding an appointment even harder.
Alternative cities like Bursa are also available in the system. You can call and ask what alternatives are available. In my experience, checking alternative cities significantly increased the chance of finding an appointment.
VIP Appointment: When Is It Worth It?#
During periods when we couldn’t find a normal appointment, we opted for a VIP appointment. Yes, it’s more expensive. But it’s really worth it in these situations:
- If you’re a family with children
- If you work at an intense pace
- If you’re not confident about your documents
What happens at a VIP appointment:
- You’re taken to a dedicated area
- There’s a staff member dedicated to you
- Documents are checked one by one
- If a document is missing, a photocopy is taken on the spot
- Photo is taken there — no problem of “photo doesn’t meet requirements”
At our first appointment, we hadn’t printed some documents related to our child; these were prepared for us on the spot.
Application as a Relative of an EU Citizen#
In the 2024–2025 period, I obtained Bulgarian citizenship. From this point, I needed to apply for my spouse, child and mother.
Important information for relatives of EU citizens:
- A separate quota applies
- Quotas fill up very quickly in summer months
- Finding an appointment in winter months is easier
Additional document request: In the first application, since my father was born in Bulgaria, additional documents were requested:
- Birth certificate from Bulgaria
- Name equivalency document
- Turkish translation notarized
- Processing at the district governorship
After completing these documents, we got another appointment and successfully concluded the application.
Letter of Good Intent: Why It Matters#
For all my applications, I always prepared a letter of good intent. In this letter:
- Purpose of travel
- Intention to return
- Ties with Turkey (work, property, family)
are stated clearly. I created a text that clearly expresses the situation by combining examples from the internet.
To this day, I have never been rejected with this approach.
Frequently Asked Questions#
