Finding Cheap Flights Is Not About Luck#
Finding cheap flights is often described as a matter of luck. But in my experience, this is not luck at all; it’s directly related to how you track the system.
In this article I’m sharing methods I’ve applied repeatedly over the years — first-hand experiences that actually work.
Quick Summary: Which Tool for What?#
| Tool | Best Use |
|---|---|
| Pegasus App | Campaign tracking, calendar prices |
| Google Flights | Destination discovery, price alerts |
| Skyscanner | Multi-airline comparison |
| Hopper | Price prediction and alerts |
Campaign Tracking with the Pegasus App#
The app I use most in my search for cheap tickets is Pegasus’s own mobile app. The most important reason: Pegasus campaigns generally notify through the app the day before.
The Hidden Signal Before a Campaign#
In the Pegasus app, after selecting departure and arrival points, you can see all prices for the coming few months on a calendar in the date field. This allows you to compare which days are cheaper.
Critical detail: When a campaign period begins, prices start to disappear on the calendar screen. This may look like an error at first, but this situation is generally a sign of an upcoming campaign.
What Time Do Campaigns Start?#
Most Pegasus campaigns start at night time. For example, if on Friday you get a notification saying “campaign tomorrow,” the campaign generally goes live around 02:00–03:00 Friday night into Saturday.
During these hours, prices become invisible — another indicator that a campaign is about to launch.
Morning checks are also important: Opening the app between 05:00–07:00 provides a significant advantage. Since I work in information technology, I’m already awake at night and this gave me an advantage many times.
Not every campaign starts at the same time. I remember one campaign where prices were announced around 10:00–11:00 during the day. After the notification arrives, you need to check the app frequently the next day.
Flight Schedule Opening Days: The Cheapest Moment#
On Pegasus, flights generally go on sale up to approximately one year in advance. In the first days when new season tickets go on sale, prices can be really very low.
Real examples:
- Flight to Belgium: 400 TL
- Return via Cologne: ~500 TL
- Basel departure + Zurich return: Also caught at a reasonable price
I bought most of these tickets approximately one year in advance. Winter period tickets are much more affordable than summer.
Season schedule:#
| Season | Sales launch | Cheapest period |
|---|---|---|
| Summer (Mar–Oct) | Usually November–December | First days of opening |
| Winter (Oct–Mar) | Usually May–June | First days of opening |
Cancellation and Refunds: Not as Bad as You Think#
“If I buy a non-refundable ticket and cancel, I lose all my money” is not always true.
When a non-refundable ticket on Pegasus is cancelled, part of the amount you paid is refunded. In fact, in one of my examples, when a ticket I bought about a year ago for 400 TL was cancelled, the amount I got back was higher than what I paid — most likely due to exchange rate differences.
During our Georgia trip we missed the flight but still received a refund.
Reading Campaign Terms#
Pegasus campaigns usually have specific conditions:
- “Buy your ticket today and tomorrow, travel between June 5 – August 5”
- Specific routes included in the campaign
- Minimum/maximum day conditions
It’s important to quickly read the campaign text and check whether it aligns with your own plans.
Daily Price Changes#
When you see high prices for a specific date, don’t give up. When you check the same route every day, you can see prices suddenly drop.
For example, a ticket at 3,000 TL might drop to 2,000 TL the next day, and even lower. The reason is usually cancellations or newly opened seats in the system.
On the Istanbul–Germany route that I fly frequently, regular checks gave me an advantage many times.
Manual Date Search#
When new season tickets open, the Pegasus app doesn’t always show all days in the date calendar. While November 5 might be expensive, November 7 might be very affordable.
Practical method: Change dates manually one by one and search. Looking one day forward or back sometimes creates hundreds of lira difference.
Google Flights: An Alternative View#
Another important tool I use for cheap tickets is Google Flights. My favorite feature: the ability to explore without selecting a fixed destination.
Destination Discovery#
Using the “Explore” tab, you can see the most affordable destinations departing from Istanbul within the next six months on a map. You can see both locations and the most affordable prices for that period simultaneously.
Setting a Price Alert#
If departure and arrival points are fixed, setting a price alert through Google Flights is very useful.
Real example: I bought the Basel departure with a Pegasus campaign and left the return open. I set up monitoring for Zurich departure return tickets. One night around 02:00–03:00 an email arrived about a very affordable ticket via Zurich.
Flexible Route Planning#
You don’t always have to depart and arrive at the same city. Train and bus networks within Europe are very well developed.
Example combinations:
- Depart to Brussels → Return from Cologne
- Depart to Amsterdam → Return from a different city
- Depart to Basel → Return from Zurich
Evaluating alternatives within a few hours’ train ride of your destination provides significant price advantages, especially for return tickets.

Frequently Asked Questions#
Which day are flights cheapest? Tuesday and Wednesday are generally the cheapest days. Friday and Sunday are the most expensive. But this is not a rule, there are exceptions — calendar checking is essential.
How far in advance should you buy tickets? For domestic: 3–6 weeks, for international: 6–12 weeks is generally the best window. But at new season openings, 10–12 months in advance can also be very attractive.
How do I not miss Pegasus campaigns? Download the Pegasus app, turn on notifications. Follow the Instagram account. If prices start disappearing on the calendar screen, a campaign is approaching.
Is Google Flights free? Yes, completely free. You buy tickets directly from the airline’s own website.
Why is the same ticket at a different price on different sites? Intermediary sites add commission. If possible, buy from the airline’s own website.
Conclusion#
Finding cheap flights is not a one-time luck thing. Using the right applications, recognizing campaign behavior, and being flexible on dates and cities form the foundation of this work.
Summary steps:
- Download the Pegasus app, turn on notifications
- Regularly check calendar prices
- Check immediately when new season tickets open
- Set up price alerts with Google Flights
