Romantic Road Guide | Bavaria’s Most Beautiful Route with Deutschlandticket and a Stroller (2026)

Table of Contents

What is the Romantic Road?
#

Romantische Straße — Germany’s most famous tourist route. Stretching approximately 460 km from Würzburg to Füssen, this route is filled with medieval towns, city walls, castles, and Alpine views.

But we didn’t do this route like typical tourists.

We did it with the Deutschlandticket, two children (aged 1 and 5), and a double stroller. We learned firsthand which cities are stroller-accessible, which stations have elevators, and which cafes are kid-friendly.

This post is a summary of that experience.

General Structure of the Route
#

The Romantic Road can be done North to South or South to North. Since we are based in Munich, we did South to North day trips—starting from Füssen and moving towards Augsburg.

Instead of doing the entire route at once, we dedicated a separate day to each city. This was more practical for the kids and allowed us to see each place better.

Is the Romantic Road Possible with the Deutschlandticket?
#

Yes — but not for all cities.

Part of the Romantic Road is accessible by train, while some parts are only reachable by bus. All the cities we visited are accessible via trains covered by the Deutschlandticket.

CityDuration from MunichDeutschlandticket

Romantic Road with a Stroller: An Honest Assessment
#

Traveling with a double stroller in Germany is much easier than you might think — but there are challenges in certain cities.

The Good News:

  • The vast majority of German train stations have elevators.
  • Regional trains (RB/RE) have spacious areas for strollers.
  • No extra fee for strollers on trains.

Things to Watch Out For:

  • Medieval towns have cobblestone streets — challenging for double strollers.
  • The path up to Neuschwanstein is steep and nearly impossible with a standard stroller.
  • You might not be able to enter some museums with a stroller.

You can find specific stroller notes for each city in our individual guides.

Cities We Visited
#

🏛️ Augsburg — The Unjustly Overlooked City
#

35 minutes from Munich. Features the Fuggerei (the world’s oldest social housing project), UNESCO heritage water canals, and the Golden Hall. The city center is largely stroller-friendly.

🏰 Füssen — The City in Neuschwanstein’s Shadow
#

2 hours from Munich. Hohes Schloss, the Lech River canyon, and turquoise Forggensee. Everyone goes to the castle and skips the town — don’t skip it.

👑 Neuschwanstein — Disney’s Inspiration
#

10 minutes from Füssen. The world’s most photographed castle. It is not possible to enter the castle with a stroller, but the view from below and Marienbrücke is impressive enough.

🏙️ Memmingen — The Medieval Town Most Don’t Know
#

1 hour from Munich. A fully walled, authentic Bavarian town without the crowds. The Altstadt (Old Town) is flat and comfortable for strollers.

🌊 Lindau — The Island City of Lake Constance (Bodensee)
#

1.5 hours from Munich. A small island on the lake with palm trees and Alpine views. Ideal for summer. The walking paths on the island are perfect for strollers.

Practical Tips
#

Best Season: April–October. Some cities are quiet but beautiful in winter; the Neuschwanstein region is stunning when covered in snow.

Day Planning: One city per day is enough with children. Doing two at once without exhausting them is difficult.

Food: Breakfast from a Bäckerei (bakery) + lunch, and dinner on the train back home. Buying from supermarkets instead of restaurants significantly lowers the budget.

Stroller Hack: Board the very last or very first carriage of the train — that’s where the stroller/bicycle area is located. During peak hours, try to arrive early to secure a spot.

This series continues to grow. This page will be updated as new cities are added.
